Abrupt Change Detection of Fault in Power SystemU sing Independent Component Analysis

This paper proposes a novel fault detector for digitalrelaying based on independent component analysis (A). Theindex for effective detection is derived from independentcomponents of fault current. The proposed fault detector reducesthe computational burden for real time applications and istherefore more accurate and robust as compared to otherapproaches. Further, a comparative assessment is carried out toestablish the effectiveness of the proposed method as compared tothe existing methods. This approach can be applied for faultclassication and localization of a distance relay reecting itsconsistency in all system changing conditions and thus validatesits ecacy in the real time applications. The method is testedunder a variety of fault and other disturbance conditions of typical power system.
