The main task of a circuit breaker is to interrupt fault currents and to isolate faulted parts of the system. A circuit breaker must also be able to interrupt a wide variety of other currents at system voltage such as capacitive currents, small inductive currents, and load currents.

Air circuit breakers are commonly used in electrical distribution systems. Air circuit breakers which include operating mechanisms that are mainly exposed to the environment. ACB is also protecting for over load, short circuit and earth fault.

High current, high voltage circuit breaker contacts, which disconnect large electrical loads, and produce arcs, are contained within special arcing chambers. These may be in air at normal pressure or in a blast of air, in Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF6), in oil or another arc-extinguishing medium, including a vacuum

ACB Stands for Air Circuit Breaker where as VCB stands for Vaccum Circuit Breaker. ACB is used for the voltage level upto 440V, whereas VCB is used beyond the 440V. Both circuit breakers differ from each other only in terms of arc quenching medium they are using.
